Is it Art or Porn?

In February 2009 Fourth Estate published the international sensation Wetlands, by Charlotte Roche. The novel polarised public and critical opinion around the world and the original German edition became Amazon’s biggest selling book — anywhere.

Today, Fourth Estate publishes the paperback edition of 2009’s most talked about and contentious novel.

The knowledge of how this lovely girl came to have this unfortunate condition is more distasteful to me than the description of her daily intimate grooming rituals or the vivid imagery of certain body parts. I thought it was well written, clever and most definitely different. While some of the passages made me wince (casual anal sex), I think this is definitely art and not porn. Caveat: I haven’t read the entire book.
