Based on exciting discoveries in mathematics, genetics, psychology and sociology, ‘Connected’ is an innovative and fascinating exploration of how social networks operate. In this brilliantly original and effortlessly engaging exploration of how much we truly influence one another, pre-eminent social scientists Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler explain why obesity is contagious, why the rich get richer, even how we find and choose our partners. Intriguing and entertaining, with revelatory implications for everything from our notion of the individual to ideas about health care policy, ‘Connected’ will change the way you think about every aspect of your life, and how you live it.

The Many Deaths of the Firefly Brothers is the incredibly exciting new book from Thomas Mullen, author of the excellent The Last Town on Earth, named Best Debut Novel of 2006 by USA Today.

In the amazingly evocative narrative, we follow the Depression-era adventures of Jason and Whit Fireson—bank robbers known as the Firefly Brothers by the press, the authorities, and an adoring public that worships their acts as heroic counterpunches thrown at a broken system.

To get a flavour of the book take a look at this video – currently featuring the US jacket and pub dates. Our version looks like this and is published in April, but don’t worry if you cant wait that long…

…We know you’ll love the book as much as we did which is why we’re giving away proof copies. Click here to find out how to get your hands on one, hot off the press or the slab, whichever you prefer.

Last week Hilary Mantel’s brilliant novel, Wolf Hall, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Set amidst the rich incidents of 1520’s England, Wolf Hall explores the intersection of individual psychology and wider politics, peeling back history to show us Tudor England and its most intriguing figures in a strikingly original light.

Hilary recently participated in the Daunts Debates, where she discussed her personal fascination with the historical period of Wolf Hall, and touched on the process of bringing characters like Thomas Cromwell, Thomas More and Henry VIII to life.

Earlier this summer Francis Wheen read a brilliant excerpt from his upcoming book, Strange Days Indeed: The Golden Age of Paranoia, at Fourth Estate’s 25th Anniversary celebration at the Roundhouse in Camden. In the video below, he narrates a ludicrous scene from the longest obscenity trial in British history, where for three weeks the court focused its attention on the anatomy of Rupert Bear…

Strange Days Indeed, tells the story of the 1970’s, a decade of collective nervous breakdown, financial meltdown, and political turmoil - a time not unlike our own. With his acute sense of the absurd Francis Wheen slices through the melange of mistrust and conspiratorial fever to recount an era of power cuts, military coups, economic anarchy and the arrival of Uri Geller. Strange Days Indeed publishes on September 3rd.

I Know This Much is the upcoming autobiography from Gary Kemp, guitarist of Spandau Ballet. In his wonderfully written memoir, Gary not only tells the story of the band, but also evokes the atmosphere of a colourfull and provocative time period: the 1980s. Check out this great film of Gary discussing his book and reading selected passages:

I Know This Much: from Soho to Spandau will be released on September 3rd. It is published by Fourth Estate.

Earlier this summer, at Fourth Estate’s 25th Anniversary party, James Lever read an extract from his novel, Me Cheeta. Decked out in a full monkey suit as the whiskey swigging Cheeta, Lever dazzled the audience with a reading from the opening chapter of his book. Check it out:

Last week, Me Cheeta was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

Award-winning comedians David Mitchell & Robert Webb returned to BBC 2 last night with their fabulous sketch show That Mitchell & Webb Look. This September Fourth Estate publish ‘This Mitchell & Webb Book’, a lovely big, colourful book featuring all-new material from the comic duo. And nothing about coal at all…

Rosie Lovell is a passionate, energetic young cook who three years ago opened up a thriving deli nestled among the salted fish, yams and sounds of reggae at the heart of Brixton market.

Rosie’s Deli has become an intimate and eclectic place where food, music and friends from all over the world tumble into one place on Electric Avenue There’s not really another café like it; it’s tiny, welcoming, warm and fantastic.

During some time out from the Café, Rosie decided to write a cook book, and I for one and glad she did! There are recipes for a hangover (often useful to me), dishes for dates (lets not talk about that) and soulful suppers to comfort and soothe (I refer you to the last parentheses). For me, this is a great cook book because it’s all about food that depends on who you are with and how you are feeling (and what’s in fridge — another important factor in my cooking escapades); all of which makes preparing a great meal that fits the moment easy and fun.

Rosie’s not a chef, she’s a damn good cook who knows her stuff and how to make a meal that lifts the spirits. Well, I’m sort of bound to say all of this really aren’t I? — seeing as work for her publisher and all — but I challenge you to look at this fantastic recipe for quail’s egg and pancetta tart and not fall in love with Rosie. Don’t be put off by the ingredients — it’s about as easy as making a bacon and egg sandwich! Take a look at the video to see what to do.

Today we bring you the third and final part of David Starkey and Hilary Mantel’s fascinating discussion of Henry VIII. In this portion, Starkey and Mantel touch upon the impressive young Henry who ascended the throne in 1509. Hailed by Thomas More as a “second christ”, in his early days the glamorous young king was regarded as a virtuous renaissance man. A very different figure, indeed, than the monstrous Henry of popular imagination. Enjoy!

As promised, here is the second installment of David Starkey and Hilary Mantel discussing the legacy of Henry VIII.

Keep watching 5th Estate as we post the final video later this week!

Five hundred years after ascending the English throne, the legacy of Henry VIII continues to fascinate and endure. David Starkey and Hilary Mantel recently had an opportunity to discuss the legendary monarch in a talk chaired by Dominic Sandbrook at the Tower of London.

Above is the first of three video installments. In the coming days we will post parts two and three of this intriguing panel discussion – so keep tuned in!
